The idea of KAMER was born at the peak of violence during 1993-95. It was officially founded in 1997 and continued to grow and strengthen in the following years. Currently we are trying to expand our activities that are ongoing in the 23 provinces of Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia to districts, villages, and remote neighborhoods. We are now thousands of women. We used to whisper that we are feminists, now we are shouting out for all to hear.

We started with what was most difficult for us. Risking being cast out, deserted, and condemned… Although most of us first became aware of violence under custody or in the streets, we saw the link between different forms of violence and recognized that it all starts inside the home.

We started experiencing personal awareness as we tried to develop an arena independent of all our identities in order to question sexism. We questioned our own violence and discrimination, how we oppressed and how we were oppressed.

We know that feminism is indispensable for a world that is free of hierarchy, discrimination, and violence, one where sharing, solidarity, transparency, participation, and being on the side of what is right and the righteous.

We believe that the methods women have devised to free themselves of violence will make this new world possible...
